The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with state arts agencies on an exciting program, Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, which invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. By encouraging students to study, memorize, and perform some of the most influential and timeless poems of the English language, it immerses them in powerful language and provocative ideas.
Thanks to the encouragement of Mrs. Lee, our school participated in this great event. Pippa White was invited to give a presentation at MHS!!
Shortly after Pippa's visit, everyone in all of Mrs. Lee's high school classes had to choose a poem approved by the POA contest and then present it in a classroom competition. The winners from each class then went on to compete in the school competition infront of everybody in the gym!
However, like in all competitions, there can only be one winner. And that winner was Miss Laura Phillips! After her victory in the school competition, Laura went on to share her skills in the Regional tournament at Kearney where she placed in the top five!
The five students selected for state finals are:
Mary Hawk, 12th grade, Ewing
Laura Phillips, 11th grade, Minatare
Carleigh Schuman, 11th grade, Parkview Christian
Adam Pasquinelly, 11th grade, St. Patrick’s
Russell Heitmann, 11th grade, Thayer Central
